An official of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense was detained for attempting to steal $40 million during the purchase of shells
In Kyiv, the head of one of the main departments of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine was detained in his office. He is accused of attempting to steal one and a half billion hryvnia (more than $40 million) during the purchase of shells. This was reported in the telegram channel of the Security Service of Ukraine.
The SBU clarified that the official became a participant in a corruption scheme. Its creation led to an overestimation of the contract amount for the purchase of shells for the Ukrainian Armed Forces by 30 percent.
According to the Security Service of Ukraine, in December last year the suspect signed an agreement with a special exporter for the wholesale purchase of ammunition. But budget funds were not quickly transferred to the company. Soon, the Defense Procurement Agency was created under the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Through this structure, a more profitable contract for the military department was concluded with the same supplier company, without the participation of intermediaries in the procurement.
Despite this, the Ministry of Defense official extended the first agreement and then signed papers transferring 40 million to the accounts of a foreign intermediary company.
The SBU added that during the search, documents confirming illegal activities were found and confiscated from the suspect. The Ministry of Defense functionary has been charged under Part 2 of Article 114 of the Criminal Code “Obstruction of the legitimate activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations.” According to it, the official faces up to 15 years in prison.
