In the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral in Tbilisi, parishioners noticed an icon depicting Joseph Stalin. Historian Giorgi Kandelaki reported this on social networks.

The image of Stalin was among the marks on the icon of the Matrona of Moscow. Marks in icon painting are parts of the icon placed around the perimeter and depicting scenes that develop or explain the plot of the central composition.

Kandelaki was indignant and called for attention to the situation. He called Stalin “the initiator of the destruction of Georgian independence” and blamed Russia for everything.

The press service of the Georgian Patriarchate confirmed to Cnews that there is indeed an image of Stalin in the cathedral.

“There are precedents that even great persecutors of the Church can end up on icons,” the press service said.
