Doctor-assisted barbie released in US with Down’s Syndrome
TV channel CNN quoting Mattel Vice President Lisa McKnight said that the Barbie doll maker has released its first-ever version of the Barbie doll with Down syndrome. According to the broadcaster, the doll’s new look was developed in collaboration with medical experts who helped develop “a new face and body sculpt” for the toy.
“We are proud to present the Down Syndrome Barbie doll, which will better capture the diversity of the world around us,” McKnight said, meaning the doll’s new look will help children be more understanding of those who look different from themselves.
The new doll is part of the company’s Barbie Fashionistas line, designed to introduce children to various human features. This series of toys already has a doll with a prosthetic leg, a girl with a hearing aid, and even in a wheelchair.
