Aliyev spoke about the prerequisites for the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan

Relations between Baku and Yerevan can normalize, the prerequisites for such a development appeared after the recognition of each other’s territorial integrity by Azerbaijan and Armenia. This was announced by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in an expanded format.

“There are serious prerequisites for the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia on the basis of mutual recognition of territorial integrity and sovereignty,” he said.

Aliyev added that Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the EAEU member countries, with the exception of Armenia, has been successfully developing for 30 years. He also announced a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which will be held at the initiative of the Russian side.

In turn, Pashinyan confirmed Yerevan’s readiness to “unblock all transport and economic ties in the region”, as well as to open regional communications. Aliyev also announced the absence of territorial claims against Armenia. Putin expressed hope that agreements would be reached as a result of the trilateral meeting in the interests of the economic development of both Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the entire region as a whole.

May 17 Pashinyan informedthat following a meeting mediated by the head of the European Council Charles Michel in Brussels on May 14, Armenia recognized 86,600 sq. km of the territory of Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan – 29,800 sq. km of the territory of Armenia.

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated in September 2020, when hostilities began in the region between the military of Armenia and Azerbaijan. As a result, a tripartite statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Hostilities have completely ceased in the conflict zone, and Russian peacekeepers have also been deployed along the line of contact and in the Lachin corridor. In 2022, the situation escalated again, and the State Border Service of Azerbaijan installed a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, on the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia.
