Aliyev and Pashinyan met for the first time after Azerbaijan’s operation in Karabakh

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan greeted each other with a handshake during a meeting at an informal summit of CIS leaders in St. Petersburg, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported. This is the first meeting between Messrs. Aliyev and Pashinyan after Nagorno-Karabakh came under the control of Azerbaijan.
Russian President Vladimir Putin invited colleagues from Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to take a tour of the palace and park complexes of St. Petersburg. At this time, Ilham Aliyev and President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko held bilateral negotiations.
Mr. Aliyev joined his colleagues later – during an excursion in Tsarskoe Selo. Having entered the hall, he greeted Vladimir Putin, and then shook hands with everyone else, including Nikola Pashinyan, RIA Novosti notes.
Today, the leaders of the CIS countries should also visit Peterhof. The informal CIS summit will end with a conversation at the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna.
On September 19–20, Azerbaijan announced an “anti-terrorist operation” in Nagorno-Karabakh. As a result, the republic was liquidated, and more than 100 thousand Armenians left the region. On December 7, the parties released a joint statement in which they confirmed the decision to resolve the conflict and sign a peace treaty.
