According to the communiqué, the African Union has decided to immediately suspend Gabon’s participation in all activities of the organization. The organization “strongly condemned the military takeover of Gabon”.
The decision came after a military group announced the removal of President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had been in power for 14 years and was re-elected for a third term.
The military said that the election results were annulled, all institutions of power were dissolved and the country’s borders were closed until further notice. They called on the population to remain calm, assuring that Gabon will continue to fulfill its obligations to the international community.
