Josef Kliment, adviser to the head of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on national associations, believes that Russian clubs and teams will soon be allowed to return to international tournaments. He noted that UEFA, “despite the difficult situation”, continued to cooperate with the Russian Football Union.
“If we stay together, we will win. Now we are facing a tough challenge, but we believe that we will overcome all obstacles, that soon we will be able to meet not only at the level of functionaries, but also at the level of players in European cup matches and European tournaments for national teams. We believe that Russian clubs and national teams will soon be able to meet opponents on the fields in the spirit of a fair fight,” Mr. Kliment said at the conference of the Russian Football Union (quoted from “RIA News”).
An adviser to the head of UEFA said that his organization wants to “build bridges between countries”, and not destroy them. He believes that he will come to Russia on a regular basis.
UEFA, together with the International Football Federation (FIFA), suspended Russian teams and clubs from participating in international competitions in February 2022 against the backdrop of Russia’s deployment of troops to Ukraine. According to the results of the first season without participation in competitions, the Russian Federation fell out of the top ten in the UEFA coefficients table.
