Adrian Mannarino leaves the US Open in the first round

It is a frank disappointment, at the same time as a real underperformance. Tuesday, for his debut at the US Open, on court n°8 swept by a capricious wind, Adrian Mannarino fell brutally, beaten in three rounds by the very modest Dutchman, Gijs Brouwer (181st in the world) in three short sets and 2 hours of play (6-3, 6-4, 6-4).
The clues were good though. “Manna” had landed in New York in the wake of his second career title, at Winston-Salem. That should have worn him down a bit, we thought. Nay! Tuesday, nothing worked for the Ile-de-France, dominated by a left-hander with a well-worked service, a strong forehand and an almost exclusive sliced backhand, who, at 26, had only played in his career… three matches out of the main ATP circuit (all in 2022) and who crossed a Top 50 for only the second time, after being beaten this year in Houston by Reilly Opelka!
In short, the performance is therefore beautiful, the most beautiful by far, undoubtedly for Gijs Brouwer. For Adrian Mannarino, on the other hand, nothing worked out on Tuesday. But then nothing at all. With 47% of first serves, he never put Brouwer in difficulty on the return, gave too much forehand and failed to seize the opportunities he got (1 break point converted on 7). A bit annoyed by the wind, by a recalcitrant knee, by a bit of everything, Mannarino even threw his racket twice, took a warning, but nothing could really revive him. And the Frenchman leaves the US Open on a very small impression.
