Added PMCs, Shawarma and Boomers to the Russian Dictionary

In the spelling dictionary of the Institute of the Russian Language named after V.V. Vinogradov RAS, 151 new words were added.

Their appearance was caused by the pandemic, the active use of social networks, the development of technology and even the consequences of the work of feminist activists.

Among the updates were such words as UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), burger, vyshyvanka, video blogger, citizen, pre-pandemic, clofelin, media fake, google, retweet, stand-up comedian, telegram channel. Reflected the Russian language and local jargon, and features of Russian politics in recent years. Now shawarma and shawarma, coronacrisis, Crimean bridge, teroborona, PMC (private military company), jetlag, boomers and other modern and unusual words for the Russian language are officially recorded.

The day before, the speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matvienko, during the meeting, instructed the committee on science, education and culture to study the situation with the use of foreign words in Russian by reading a poem from the dictionary for replacing anglicisms.

Earlier in 2022, the Ministry of Education published a draft government decree called “Basic Rules of Russian Spelling”. It lists the spelling requirements for vowels and consonants, hard and soft zanks in words, the letters “y”, “traditional spellings” and “morphological and graphic analogues”. The creators of the document paid attention to the spelling of the letter “ё”.

Work on a complete list of the rules of Russian spelling is carried out by the Institute of the Russian Language. Vinogradov of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to the organization’s plans, it will be completed by the end of 2023.
