In Russia, leaders of pseudoscience and pseudomedicine have once again been elected. On February 17, the results of the competition for the title of “honorary academician” and “corresponding members” of VRAL, who made the greatest contribution to the spread of pseudoscience, were summed up. At the end of last year, after a year-long break, the competition for the title of “academicians” of VRAL began again – this award was established by Russian scientists; it is awarded for particularly enchanting pseudo-achievements and promotion of pseudoscientific practices.
The purpose of the award in the field of medical sciences is to bring to light those who, taking advantage of the gullibility of citizens, treat them with energies, the power of thought, herbs, self-massage and even screaming into a pillow. Recently, a popular vote determined the finalists who are vying for the title of “honorary academician” and a prize in the form of a golden enema.
Since 2016, elections have been held for “honorary academician” and “corresponding members” of VRAL, who have made the greatest contribution to the spread of pseudoscience. At the end of last year, elections began in two categories – natural sciences (“Honorary Academician of the People’s Academy of Natural Sciences of Eurasia”, or “VRAL NARAENE”) and medical sciences (“Honorary Academician of the Academy of Preventive Chacrosurgery”, or APCHHI).
The medical nomination was established in 2021 specifically for traditional healers or doctors who have moved as far as possible from evidence-based medicine. Any Russian could nominate a candidate. Then the experts (this year the jury of the award included outstanding Russian doctors: oncologist Sergei Polikarpov, psychiatrist Yuri Sivolap, allergist Olga Zhogoleva, gastroenterologist Alexei Paramonov, cardiologist Irina Vasilyeva) chose the most alternatively gifted, from whom a popular vote determined the finalists.
In the medical category, the following candidates competed this time for a valuable prize – the “Golden Coffee Enema”.
Herbalist Evgenia Belyavskaya (she has her own herbal trading enterprise) compiles herbal “comprehensive protocols at discounted prices” for patients, with the help of which cancer, AIDS, fungi, and blood diseases are supposedly cured; she states that her herbs work on the “mental , etheric and intuitive levels” and penetrate “every atom of the body.” Being an opponent of antibiotics (and in general any official methods of treatment and medicines with proven effectiveness), the herbalist suggests replacing them with Spanish moss. She “cures” diabetes and hepatitis with a cedar sponge. For 700 thousand rubles. promises to cure cancer. However, in her coordinate system there are no diseases at all: schizophrenia, infertility, and HIV are only “adaptation in the process of evolution.” Last year, Belyavskaya became involved in a scandal: she sued oncologist Ekaterina Timofeeva, who criticized her publicly. Alas, the court rejected her claim with the wording that her company “does not have a positive business reputation.” Still, business remained unaffected.
Pavel Evdokimenko is a doctor and writer, a popular expert on various television shows. Medical education does not prevent him from having his own views on treatment, which are based on old misconceptions of Soviet times and modern alternative practices such as gargling with blue iodine, cleansing the liver and kidneys of toxins using charcoal, treating with leeches, herbs and drugs with unproven effectiveness. Practices subcutaneous injections of aloe. He offers his many subscribers videos from the series “one simple exercise heals your knees.” In addition, he recommends boosting immunity with herbal preparations and bee products, and also dissuades patients from antibiotics, which “reduce immunity.”
Timofey Karmanitsky is also a doctor who became disillusioned with medicine and went into alternative fields. Promotes the version that all diseases are caused by nerves, acidification of the body, worms, as well as bread and milk. Together with his wife, they conduct healing sessions for almost any disease by resolving psychological conflicts and using dietary supplements against parasites. He believes that the cause of diseases – from coronavirus infection and myopia to cancer – is mental ill-being. For example, I am sure that the conflict of separation can cause acne on the skin and even develop chickenpox.
Ilya Magerya is again a doctor who calls evidence-based medicine “a farce mired in corruption.” He has his own ideas about the nature and treatment of diseases. After remote consultations, he prescribes tons of dietary supplements and anti-parasitic cleanses to patients. But not only. For example, a certified endocrinologist prescribes treating thyroid disease in a very non-standard way: screaming into a pillow or even “singing.” “Singing the thyroid gland relaxes muscles, relieves spasms, prevents the appearance of nodules and cysts, improves blood and lymph flow, which helps remove toxins in a timely manner,” says the doctor. Well, according to the doctor, you can restore the menstrual cycle by installing paintings by Mageri himself on your smartphone screensaver. He modestly calls his paintings “ART-pills.” According to him, the painting “Women’s Health” contributed to the arrival of menstruation in more than a hundred women within the first 24 hours after its painting.
Maria Samarina is an expert in working with the subconscious and human energy, heads no less than the “World Organization of Awareness and Human Potential”. Author of the “spiral development method” (it’s complicated), which is supposedly supported by scientific research from international universities. He is interested in a bunch of pseudosciences: Vedic astrology, numerology, bioenergy, metaphorical maps, makes predictions for the future by date of birth and develops transformation programs that will help transform all areas of life. He can cure any disease with the power of thought (though with the exception of congenital ones). He believes that monkeypox was created artificially as part of the “evolutionary transition of the Earth from one vibration to another.” I came up with my own etymology for the word “disease” – “God heals with knowledge.” The disease itself appears when “we exude a stench in our thoughts.”
Olga Shishova has a specialized education, but she calls herself “a doctor of medicine in the field of alternative medicine.” The author of a methodology for improving the health of patients using naturopathic methods based on the study of body fluids: blood, saliva and urine. Fights acidification of the body, restores the aura and leaky intestines, applies leeches (including in the form of suppositories) and generates “hydrogen water”. Recommends raising your arms up after each meal to restore the position of the internal organs and free them from the clamp. He believes that eating meat contributes to the appearance of crystals that touch peripheral nerve endings and acidify the brain.
Based on the voting results, Pavel Evdokimenko became an “honorary academician” of the APCHHI. He’ll get the enema he deserves. Not simple, but golden. Herbalist Evgenia Belyaevskaya and endocrinologist Ilya Magerya received the title of “corresponding members” of the APCHHI.
