Accidents on Russian roads in 2023 increased by 4.5% – Kommersant

The number of road traffic accidents at the end of 2023 increased by 4.5% compared to 2022, according to data posted on the statistical portal of the State Traffic Inspectorate stat.gibdd.ru. In total, 132.4 thousand road accidents occurred, in which 14.5 thousand people died (+2.3%), 166.5 thousand were injured (+4.3%).

The leaders in the increase in the number of road accidents were Kalmykia (+35.6%), Omsk region (32.5%), Tyva (+24.9%) and Novosibirsk region (+21.9%). The accident rate decreased most in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (-30%), Chukotka (-23.5%), Mordovia (-16.5%), Chechnya (-14.3%) and in the Tomsk region (-12.6% ). The most accident-prone regions in absolute terms were Moscow (8.1 thousand accidents; increase +5.3%) and Krasnodar Territory (6.15 thousand accidents; +6%)

The leaders in the increase in the number of deaths were Kalmykia (+92.2%), Karelia (+72.3%), Ivanovo (+43.9%) and Yaroslavl regions (+43.8%), Khakassia (+41.5% ), Tyva (+38.3%). The number of victims on the roads of Chukotka (-66.7%), the Republic of Mari El (-46.8%), Pskov (-31.2%) and Ulyanovsk regions (-34%), Amur region (27.8) is rapidly decreasing. %). In absolute terms, the most deaths occurred on the roads of the Krasnodar Territory (793 people; +3.9%) and the Moscow Region (664 people; -6.5%).

As Kommersant reported, among the main reasons for the growth, the traffic police cited the redirection of cargo flows from west to east and the growing popularity of auto tourism, for which the road infrastructure was not ready.
