Approximately 3,600 Russian citizens who are not going to take the language exam will be forced to leave Latvia. The representative of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia, Maira Rose, spoke about this on Monday, September 18.
We are talking about amendments to local legislation obliging citizens of the Russian Federation who have permanent residence in Latvia to obtain a certificate of proficiency in the Latvian language at level A2.
According to Rose, about 3,600 Russians did not apply for testing. They will be notified of the need to leave Latvia within 90 days.
At the same time, on September 14, the Seimas by a majority vote approved amendments to the immigration law, which extend by two years the period for passing the state language exam to obtain the right to permanent residence, but at the same time an application for testing must be submitted no later than December 31, 2023. Only people over 75 years old do not need to take the exam.
At the same time, the United Nations came out in defense of Russians after the introduction of a ban on teaching in Russian in Latvian schools, calling it discrimination and violation of human rights.
