Almost 15 million people in Russia are in a state of deep depression, which is almost 10% of the total population of the country, follows from the analysis of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI). Among the main causes of depression among Russians are a long illness, domestic violence, the death of a loved one, loneliness and a large loan.
About 40 thousand people took part in the ASI study. Its results were presented by the agency’s general director Svetlana Chupsheva at the fifth Forum of Regional Social Innovations in Moscow. According to the ASI, one of the most common causes of major depression is domestic violence. As the study showed, up to 700,000 Russian citizens may encounter it every year. The ASI noted that once having experienced violence, a person will fall into this situation regularly.
“We did a lot of research looking at people’s feedback on various aspects of the social sphere. A lot of people experience depression and loneliness. Today this is a global challenge not only for our country. And we must understand how social policy can respond to this challenge,” Ms. Chupsheva said during the forum (quoted from site ASI)
According to the results of the study, ASI selected over 50 life situations, for each of which “hypotheses are being built and solutions are being selected”. In the near future, the agency plans to launch work in the regions and formulate for the subjects specific problems “here and now” that reduce the quality of life of people.
