The Higher School of Economics, together with the Foundation for Assistance to People with Dementia and Their Families, published the results of a joint study on the awareness of the Russian population about such a disease as dementia.

As it turned out, only 60% of the respondents “have heard something about dementia”, 25% “think that their elderly relatives have signs of dementia, but are not very worried about it.” And 80% of respondents “do not know at all where to go to confirm or refute dementia.”

A series of actions took place in Russia, the purpose of which is to draw the attention of people around to the problem of dementia. There were conferences and forums of doctors, round tables, meetings, mass races and even picnics, the task of which was to improve the quality of care for people with dementia. According to Alexandra Shchetkina, President of the Foundation for Helping People with Dementia and Their Families, a website dedicated to increasing knowledge about dementia was opened together with partners. There, visitors can learn about the first signs of the disease, preventive measures and risk reduction, as well as get tested for signs of dementia or find a doctor. According to WHO experts, every tenth person in the world has signs of dementia. The disease is progressing. And if no action is taken, then by 2030 on the planet the diagnosis of dementia will have 82 million people, and by 2050 – 152 million. The most common cause of the disease is Alzheimer’s disease.

“I am very pleased that we have met the awareness goals we set for ourselves this year. Perhaps the most important thing is that we have launched a website where each person can get maximum information about dementia and its symptoms. And also to find a doctor for consultation and further treatment,” said Alexandra Shchetkina. “All this gives hope that in our country the situation of families with loved ones with dementia will improve with time.
