A student who stalked his teacher for several years avoided prison: he called himself a “dear slave”

A “delusional” British stalker who harassed his former teacher with often sexually suggestive emails has avoided jail. But only for a while. The restless student Tin Yung repeatedly came to the teacher’s office, and once even sent her an invitation to the registry office for their “wedding.”

Tin Yung, a 28-year-old former Southampton University student, repeatedly emailed maths teacher Erengul Dodd, calling himself her “husband”, “loyal follower” and “dear slave” as part of a “sinister” three-year harassment campaign.

Several times the former student appeared in the teacher’s office, and once even brought with him printed photographs of her six-year-old son.

The “deeply traumatized” teacher, writes the Daily Mail, had to temporarily change her job for fear that Jung would show up.

Judges have now handed the stalker a restraining order and a suspended prison sentence, saying his behavior was “simply unacceptable.”

Southampton Magistrates’ Court heard that Young joined Professor Dodd’s lectures in September 2015 while finishing his final year at the Russell Group institute.

In a statement read to the court, the teacher described Jung as a “good student” who was “often alone.”

Jung, who now lives in Edinburgh, graduated “without problems” in June 2016 as he was one of the “top students in the class”.

About three years after Jung had graduated, Professor Dodd returned from her lunch break to find her former student standing outside her office. During the interaction the pursuer “looked pleased.” But this painless conversation was followed by a three-year campaign of harassment against Jung against his former teacher.

Erengul Dodd began receiving “confusing” and “frequent” emails from Jung, who referred to himself as “your lover.” According to the clarification, these emails were constant and often had “different addresses and different styles.” They were often of a sexual nature.

In one case, in June 2020, Jung invited his former teacher to a wedding ceremony for the two of them. The prosecutor told the court: “He signed up at the registry office and sent her an email inviting her to their wedding.”

In an earlier statement to police, Professor Dodd said: “I have no idea why he became attracted to me. I never had anything other than a professional relationship with him. For me, this person is a former student whom I plan to leave behind.”

Professor Dodd described Jung’s courtship as “delusional” and “disturbing”.

Jung himself pleaded guilty to stalking Professor Dodd between July 2019 and April last year. Mitigating, his spokesman Nigel Couzens said: “He fully accepts the fact that there was no relationship. Moreover, he acknowledges that his actions caused the woman significant distress.”

Couzens added that Jung has “no intention” of further contact with the professor. Magistrate Gary Chant banned Young from entering Hampshire. Sentencing the former student, the judge said: “This was a very serious offense and the harassment continued over a long period of time. You found her family photographs, photographs that showed her six-year-old son. She had to temporarily change jobs.”

Chant stressed that the crime was “very serious” but told Young that “you won’t go to jail today.”

The court sentenced the defendant to 18 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and gave him a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the professor or entering Hampshire.

Young will also have to pay a total of £239 costs and complete a 12-month offender program.
