On the night of today, August 18, a short magnetic storm of moderate strength was recorded, informs Solar Astronomy Laboratory of IKI and ISEF. The magnetic field stabilizes during the day.
On the planetary scale, the maximum value of the Kp index reached 6. The Kp index characterizes the amplitude of the Earth’s magnetic field, the measurement scale is nine-point. The current event corresponds to a second level storm. Possible magnetic storms were reported in early August.
A storm of this magnitude and duration is not an extreme event, scientists say. However, it can be perceived by sensitive communication and navigation systems, as well as weather-sensitive people.
Now a strong geomagnetic storm is approaching the Earth, according to science alert. In the coming days, it will be possible to observe a strong storm, as well as several moderate and weak ones.
