People forced to wait for evacuation have nowhere else to go
Thousands of people have gathered at the Rafah checkpoint from the Gaza Strip, awaiting evacuation.
Among those gathered is a Russian woman, Kristina, with her three-year-old son. The woman told us what was happening on the border with Egypt.
Russian woman Kristina with her three-year-old child has been sitting next to the Rafah border crossing on the border with Egypt for more than a day.
– We lived in the north of the Gaza Strip. The situation there is catastrophic: there is no water, electricity, gas. Running out of gas. On Friday we were told to flee to the southern part. I only managed to take a small bag. My husband’s parents and I fled.
Christina sends me a video of her running from the house. The next shots are of a broken road and destroyed houses. Then a video from the hospital…
“At first we had to hide in the hospital,” Christina continues. “There were a lot of ambulances in the area.” The bodies of the dead lay on the ground and began to decompose. The refrigerators didn’t work. The smell was terrible. I had to cover the child’s face so he couldn’t see it. She hugged her son to her and ran through the entire hospital. We waited out the explosions, and on Sunday we were told to go to the checkpoint, and on Monday they promised to organize an evacuation. But there was nothing.
Christina sends a video of the field. And explains:
– I was able to get to the Rafah checkpoint. There were many lands here where olives grow. I don’t know who owns these fields, but people were allowed here to wait. Now there are hundreds, even thousands of people here. It seems that half of the Gaza Strip has come here. We are sitting in the fields, a 10-minute walk from the checkpoint. We don’t come close, there are too many people there. I’m afraid to go into a crowd with a child. Here we sit and wait for us to be released. We have nowhere else to go. Lay a blanket on the ground and sleep. We eat bread and canned food, water is running out. The shops are empty. The only things left on the shelves are shampoos and wipes, which no one buys. They no longer sell bread, there are no canned goods left.
Another Russian woman, Yulia, stayed in the city: “On Monday I went in search of water. I reached the Red Cross hospital, where I could get water, wash myself in the sink, and charge my gadgets. All that was left was technical water, with a yellowish tinge. You can’t drink it, but people already drink it. Just to go to the toilet, I stood in line for half an hour. Now I’ll rest and go again, I want to wash my 10-month-old granddaughter, change clothes and wash the baby’s clothes.”
I ask my interlocutor, what do you think you should do next? Julia replies: “I’m even afraid to think. No clarity.”
