At Vaclav Havel Airport in Prague, Russian citizen Evgeny Gerasimenko was detained under an international arrest warrant issued by the Russian authorities. The incident occurred on January 7, when Gerasimenko was traveling from Riga through Prague to Paris. According to the publication Denik N, the Russian planned to request political asylum in France, claiming that he was being persecuted in Russia because of his anti-war position and participation in protests.

An international arrest warrant was issued by Russia in 2023 in connection with alleged financial fraud committed by Gerasimenko. The decision on the possible extradition of the detainee to Russia will be considered by the Prague City Court.

According to data from the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia for January-November 2023, law enforcement agencies of foreign countries refused to satisfy 101 requests from Moscow to extradite citizens for criminal prosecution. Moreover, during this period, 126 people were extradited from abroad to the Russian side.
