A kitten of a rare Far Eastern leopard rescued in Primorye, which was orphaned, left without a mother, began to successfully hunt rabbits in a rehabilitation center. This was told in the national park “Land of the Leopard”.
State inspectors near the border of a specially protected area caught an emaciated four-month-old kitten. After that, he was taken to the rehabilitation center for Amur tigers and other rare animals.
This is the first case of forced removal of the Far Eastern leopard from the wild at such a young age.
The leopard was emaciated and injured, but the test results showed no disease. The beast gained a weight of 9 kilograms, although at admission it was only 4.5 kg. He has now been released into a spacious enclosure.
“By the time the leopard moved into the enclosure, several rabbits had already been released inside. As a predator should, Leo 260M had to track down and catch its prey on its own,” the experts of the national park said. They said that the first attempts to hunt were unsuccessful. Inexperience only chased prey.Later, he began to catch prey.
At the end of August, the animal is waiting for a new medical examination, at which time experts will be able to examine the entire enclosure and find out how many rabbits the kitten has got. The animal is being revaccinated against the panleukopenia virus and other diseases dangerous for predators.
