The myth of the previous end of the world, the non-descent of the Holy Fire was dispelled by the priest Pavel Velikanov
The doctrine that the non-descent of the Holy Fire on Easter in Jerusalem at the Holy Sepulcher is associated with the end of the world does not exist, Archpriest Pavel Velikanov, rector of the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on Gorodnya, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“There is no doctrine approved by the church consciousness that the descent or non-descent of the Holy Fire somehow correlates with the beginning or not the beginning of the end of the world,” said the clergyman.
According to him, this statement is a private theological opinion of those that have no confirmation. “We do not know from history when it was confirmed in writing that the Holy Fire did not descend,” said Pavel Velikanov.
He emphasized that the symbolism of the Holy Fire allows the believer to wonder if there is a glimmer of divine light in his soul, brought by the resurrected Jesus Christ “into the darkness of our lives.” Velikanov noted that “the relationship of a living person with a living God is important,” therefore, all services in the church revolve “around building personal relationships between God and the community of Christians” gathered in the temple.
“It is important to focus on the symbolism of the Holy Fire, and not on some special magical action,” said the clergyman.
He noted that “magical action is always mechanical, it cannot fail to work.”
Velikanov explained the essence of the mechanistic approach: “if you don’t get a natural result, then you pressed the wrong buttons or something broke” and called it unacceptable for Christianity.
