A new criminal case was opened against former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev (recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent and included in the list of terrorists and extremists), the agency reports “RIA News” with reference to law enforcement agencies. The case was initiated under Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“carrying out the activities of a foreign or international non-governmental organization in respect of which a decision was made to recognize its activities as undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation”).
Telegram channel “Caution news” connects the criminal case of the ex-deputy with the “Congress of People’s Deputies”. In May 2023, the Ministry of Justice included the NGO “Congress of People’s Deputies” in the register of undesirable organizations.
Ilya Ponamarev left Russia in the fall of 2014. Already in 2015, at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Mr. Ponomarev was stripped of his parliamentary immunity. Then the first criminal case was opened against the former deputy for embezzlement at the Skolkovo Foundation. Now the former Ilya Ponomarev lives in Ukraine, where he has already received citizenship.
In 2022, the ex-deputy was arrested in absentia in Russia on charges of spreading fake news about the Russian army. In June 2023, at the associates of Mr. Ponomarev passed searches.
