A new cartoon about Mario will be released in 2026 – Kommersant

Japanese company Nintendo announcedthat the sequel to the film “Super Mario Bros. at the Movies” will appear in theaters on April 3, 2026. The film is being developed jointly with Illumination and Universal, and the authors of the original film will return to the project.
It will be produced by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and written by Matthew Vogel. According to Mr. Miyamoto, the authors are going to further expand the world of Mario. Illumination is already working on the storyboards for the upcoming film, as well as the environments, with work on animation starting soon.
Nintendo announced the start of work on the film as part of Mario Day, which is celebrated on March 10th. The company announced new LEGO Super Mario sets, and also announced release dates for games in the Mario universe: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (May 23, 2024) and Luigi`s Mansion 2 HD (June 27, 2024).
The original Super Mario Bros. Movie was released on April 5, 2023 and became the second highest-grossing film of 2023 with $1.3 billion. The film is also the second highest-grossing animated film in history after Frozen 2.
