A meeting of the heads of the IAEA and Rosatom took place in Istanbul on the situation around the ZNPP

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi held talks with the head of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev on the situation around the Zaporozhye NPP. The meeting took place in Istanbul, the press service of the IAEA reports.
“The IAEA Director General met in Istanbul today with a Russian delegation led by Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev to discuss issues related to safety at the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the creation of a protective zone around the plant,” the Twitter post said.
November 21 IAEA specialists discovered at Zaporizhia NPP non-radioactive leakage from condensate tanks. They added that “key equipment remained intact and there are no immediate threats to nuclear safety.” Earlier today, Advisor to the General Director of Rosenergoatom Concern Renat Karchaa informedthat the leak was due to damage to the distillate containers.
At the same time, Likhachev announced the risk of a nuclear accident at the ZNPP against the backdrop of shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which resumed on November 19 and 20. According to Karchaa, 15 arrivals were recorded, including from special building No. 2, where fresh nuclear fuel is stored.
Grossi urged “immediately stop” shelling of the station. On November 20, he announced trips to Russia, Ukraine, as well as to the Zaporizhzhya NPP in order to ensure safety at the facility. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat Moscow is also concerned about the situation around the ZNPP. He said that all countries of the world need to influence Kyiv so that the Ukrainian military stops shelling the station.
In early September, following the results of the IAEA mission to the Zaporizhzhya NPP, experts called for an end to attacks on the plant and the establishment of a safe zone around it. 17 November IAEA Board of Governors accepted a resolution calling on Russia to abandon its claims to the Zaporizhzhya NPP and withdraw all military and civilian personnel from its territory. The agency believes that Ukraine should gain control over the facility.
