Arend Feinstra, his wife and eight children left their country due to rejection of the values postulated by the Canadian authorities. They are ready to stay in the Nizhny Novgorod region and create their own farm. However, for this they need resident status, which can be obtained after successfully passing the Russian language exam. According to the Canadian, the nine months during which his family has a tourist visa is not enough to learn the language.
If Mr. Feinstra and his wife are unable to pass the test, they will not receive resident status and will be forced to leave Russia.
The Nizhny Novgorod government says that providing temporary asylum will allow the Canadian family to stay in Russia for another year and prepare for the exam. At the same time, regional authorities are helping Canadians select land for future farming. They were also quickly granted a temporary residence quota.
In Canada, Mr. Feinstra spent 15 years raising cattle and running a goat dairy farm. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, he hopes to restore the family farm model and expand it.
