A creepy ghost was seen at the residence of the British kings, Balmoral.

On the night of October 31 to November 1, All Saints’ Day is celebrated. This is a Western European tradition; the predecessor of the holiday is considered to be Celtic Samhain. On this day, as they believed in ancient times, dead people and evil spirits could enter the world of the living. There are many legends that in the royal palaces of Great Britain you can meet otherworldly inhabitants of the castle. Balmoral is home to one of the creepiest, according to a former butler.

The Daily Mail spoke to the former royal butler ahead of All Hallows’ Day. He claims that the ghost of Balmoral Castle cannot be compared with any of the frightening inhabitants of other residences.

Etiquette expert and former butler to King Charles III Grant Harrold believes there is a giggling ghost haunting the castle’s basement and claims to have seen it in person.

“I remember when I went down to the basement, everything was moving: bowls and chairs. One day the housekeeper and I turned off the lights and heard a little boy giggling. It’s safe to say that the royal residence is still haunted to this day,” he says.

Balmoral Castle is located in Scotland and is described as a “typical and fairly ordinary” Victorian country house. Queen Elizabeth II loved to spend summer days there. Her granddaughter Princess Eugenie described it this way in a documentary dedicated to the Queen’s 90th birthday: “I think grandma is really happy there. I think she really, really loves the Highlands (that’s what the highlands in Scotland are called. – Note “MK”).”

While at Balmoral, the royals “act like normal people—to some extent. They go out every day, going on expeditions,” recalled the family’s former photographer, Lord Lichfield.

Indeed, the Queen was known to enjoy riding her horse around the grounds. Before his death, Prince Philip enjoyed spending time grilling.

But why could there be a ghost there? There is a legend among Balmoral employees that there used to be a well in the basement and a hundred years ago a boy fell into it, “unfortunately, he drowned and was buried in one of the local cemeteries.” Since then, stories have emerged that his ghost haunts the basement.

Another story happened with the late queen: “I was told that one evening Queen Elizabeth was in the library and one of the corgis sensed something behind the curtains next to the window,” Grant Harrold said.

The former butler of Charles III notes that Balmoral, in comparison with other castles, particularly impressed him: “I remember living in a house in Scotland and working upstairs in one of the rooms. I went out to get something, came back, and all the chairs were pushed back. I was alone in the house. A lot of these things happened from time to time.”

Another residence, owned by the former Prince of Wales and current King Charles III, in southwest England’s Highgrove, is also notable for paranormal activity: “I also remember staying at the residence of King Charles III and one of the police officers seeing a ghostly figure walking through the grounds. Luckily, I’ve never seen anything like it. I can easily get scared by things like that.”

Sandringham Palace is considered by many royal workers to be at the top of the list of paranormal residences: “Queen Elizabeth II’s late father George VI died at Sandringham, and I think Sandringham is a creepy place,” said Grant Harrold, who also admitted that still cannot come to terms with the death of the queen.

He added: “It was quite uncomfortable walking around there at night. The walls of the house have seen a lot, and many royals have died here. George VI died there, as did George V and even the Duke of Clarence. So it’s not surprising that there have been cases of paranormal activity.”

The former butler to Charles III also notes working at Mey Castle in Caithness, Scotland, where many workers also claim to have seen ghosts. Harrold himself did not see anything, but, as he admits, if he had met a spirit, it would not have surprised him. He told the publication why: “The first night I stayed there, the staff hid a mannequin outside my door to scare me – and it worked! Personally, I don’t think the late Queen would have believed in ghosts, but with King Charles III you never know. He’s a pretty open person, so I wouldn’t be surprised.”

The younger members of the royal family were more imbued with the spirit of All Hallows’ Day. In their 2022 Netflix documentary, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, shared never-before-seen photos from their Halloween party with Princess Eugenie and her businessman husband Jack Brooksbank. The photo was taken in 2016 in Toronto, when the relationship between Prince Harry and his wife was not yet disclosed. The Duchess recalled on Ellen DeGeneres: “He came to visit me in Toronto, and our friends, his cousin Eugenie and her husband Jack, were invited, and the four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes just to hang out. It was a fun night on the town before word got out that we were a couple. We were dressed up for a post-apocalypse themed party, so we wore all these really fancy costumes.”
