A 29-year-old chef from the US state of Michigan died from a terrible fungal infection that ate holes in his lungs and left them looking like Swiss cheese. The Sun writes about this.
Ian Pritchard suffered from blastomycosis, a disease caused by a fungus that is mainly found in soil in wooded areas. Ian was hospitalized in November 2023. The young man’s condition worsened; it turned out that fungal spores began to corrode his internal organs, especially the lungs.
“They showed us a picture of his lungs and they literally looked like Swiss cheese,” Ian’s father said.
The patient was connected to a life support system and put into a coma, but doctors were unable to help him. The man himself asked to be disconnected from the life support system. On February 3 he died.
Blastomycetes usually live in moist soil, rotting wood and leaves. If they enter the human body through inhalation, it can lead to a fungal infection. Symptoms include cough, fever, chills, muscle pain, joint pain and chest pain. The infection is treatable if detected early.
