At the end of 2021, Russia was among the top five countries with the highest rate of HIV infection. According to data provided by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Russia accounts for 3.9% of the 1.5 million new infections in the world. According to this indicator, only African countries are ahead of us, including Mozambique (6.5%) and Nigeria (4.9%).

UNAIDS estimates are in line with data from the Ministry of Health, which announced more than 50,000 new infections in 2021. The department recalled: every eleventh Russian with HIV infection does not know about his diagnosis, in Europe – every eighth. This allows us to talk about a hidden epidemic of HIV infection in the European region.
