An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 occurred off the Kuril Islands southwest of Shikotan Island. This follows from data Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, told RIA Novosti, the epicenter of the shocks was in the sea, 39 km southwest of the village of Malokurilskoye on Shikotan Island. The source was located at a depth of 41 km.
According to the head of the seismic station, during the earthquake, residents of settlements on the islands of Shikotan and Kunashir felt tremors with a force of 4 points.
On April 3, the northern Kuriles had fixed an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 and another one with a magnitude of 6.9 in the south of the Kamchatka Territory. Several buildings in the cities of the region were damaged.
