61% of Russians supported reducing the working week by an hour – Kommersant

According to a job search service survey SuperJob, 61% of Russians support the bill to reduce the working week from 40 to 39 hours. As the study showed, women (67%) are more likely to support the initiative than men (56%).
The survey was conducted from November 10 to 13. It was attended by 1,600 Russians over 18 years of age who work full time on a five-day, 40-hour workweek schedule with days off on Saturday and Sunday.
16% of respondents were against the project; they were mainly afraid of salary cuts. 23% found it difficult to evaluate the initiative.
The study showed that 70% of respondents worked full time on Friday. 28% of respondents have reduced their work hours on Friday by one hour. Another 1% of respondents work two or three hours less on Friday.
According to the Labor Code, the working week is at least 40 hours. November 9, senator from the Ulyanovsk region Airat Gibatdinov submitted to the State Duma bill to shorten the working week. He proposes fixing a shortened working day on Friday or before a holiday. The senator explained his idea in terms of overtime: according to him, many employers increase production without expanding their staff or additional payments.
As Kommersant previously wrote, in 2023, 42% of enterprises would like to increase the number of their employees – by an average of 13%. At the same time, some of them, especially in the industrial sector, complain about difficulties in recruiting qualified employees – filling a vacancy can take up to four months.
