6 countries have published a declaration against the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international tournaments, the document is published on the Inside the Games portal.
The declaration was signed by the sports ministers of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Slovakia. The document says that the issue of the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes is currently under discussion. Representatives of the above-mentioned countries stated the need to “defend the position of preventing Russia and Belarus from participating in international sports competitions in any form.”
Referring to their “historical experience”, they believe that the easing of restrictions “would be the wrong signal.” The countries that signed the declaration claim that they learned “with surprise and indignation” about the plans of the IOC regarding the possibility of participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international sports tournaments, including the Olympic Games. They called the IOC proposal “terrible”.
IOC President Thomas Bach said that athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus could compete at the Olympic Games in 2024 in a neutral status. The sports official acknowledged that their exclusion from the Games is not in line with the values and mission of the Olympic Charter. Later, the IOC announced that the decision on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2024 Olympics had not yet been made.
The Summer Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11.
