In the UK, a successful womb transplant was performed in which a 40-year-old woman donated her uterus to her younger sister so that she could carry and give birth to a child on her own. This was written by the Daily Mail.
The operation lasted 17 hours. It was the first time in the history of Great Britain that it was held. Doctors note that the transplanted uterus is fully functioning, and now the 34-year-old woman has a good chance of carrying and giving birth to a child. The recipient herself expressed her desire to have as many children as possible.
According to gynecologist Richard Smith, before the operation, the young woman could not get pregnant due to the absence of a uterus from birth, although she has ovaries. Thanks to this, it was possible to extract the eggs and artificially fertilize them by IVF. In the coming months, it is planned to transfer the embryos to the transplanted uterus. Doctors estimate the probability of a successful outcome of the procedure at 80%. The delivery will be by caesarean section at 37 weeks of gestation to prevent stress on the transplanted organ.
To date, about a hundred uterine transplants have been performed in the world, and due to this, about 50 children have already been born. The first such operation was performed in Saudi Arabia in 2000, but complications arose and the organ had to be removed.
In 2014, the first child born by a woman with a transplanted uterus was born.
In the UK, the first such operation was performed back in February, but information about it was kept secret in order to observe the patient longer and make sure of a positive result.
It was previously reported that in the US, a woman in a coma successfully gave birth to a healthy baby. Due to a brain hemorrhage, the pregnant doctors placed her in a medically induced coma at the 39th week.
