35% of survey participants said the sun revolves around the earth

The telephone survey of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center involved 1,600 people aged 18 and over from different cities of the country. And it turned out that about every third Russian is convinced that the Sun revolves around the Earth. This was stated by 35% of the respondents. Every fifth respondent is sure (21%) that primitive people existed simultaneously with dinosaurs. And 44% of respondents are sure that GMO foods can cause cancer.
Of course, even Alexander Pushkin wrote: “We all learned little by little. Something, somehow.” But such “bright” ideas of the inhabitants of our country about the processes that take place in the universe, as well as knowledge of history and geography, can cause fear for the future of the country.
True, VTsIOM representatives say that there is reason to hope for a brighter future. In 2007, when a similar survey was conducted, almost 30% of respondents were sure that ancient people lived in the same historical period as dinosaurs. And 67% were afraid of getting cancer from eating GMO foods.
“If we analyze the results of the survey, it becomes sad to realize what a low level of literacy our citizens have, especially older ones,” says child psychologist Yulia Maramzina. – I would be sad to think that our system of general education is so imperfect that it betrays underage. Only the fact that, again, according to the survey, a higher level of understanding of the essence of science and knowledge of its main provisions was shown by the group aged 18 to 24 is encouraging. Among them, almost 61% gave at least five correct answers. In the group older than 60 years, only 33% of them were. I think that the system of general personality development should be more actively instilled in people’s interest in reading, because it develops the inner world of a person and his knowledge.
