In the school yard in front of the gymnasium, 334 candles were lit every evening, according to the number of victims of the terrorist attack. The poem “The Great Sorrow of Ossetia”, written after the terrorist attack by Shamil Dzhigkaev, was read out. After that, two bells sounded, symbolizing the first explosions in the gym. School students in Beslan then released 334 white balloons. They released the same number of balloons after the poem “Names” was read and the names of all the dead were listed. The watch of memory ended with a requiem concert performed by a symphony orchestra.
During a demonstration at School No. 1 in Beslan on September 1, 2004, a group of terrorists took more than 1,200 people hostage. Two days later, the storming of the building killed 334 people, 186 of whom were children. 126 hostages became disabled, including 70 children.
