The head of VTsIOM Valery Fedorov believes that “metropolitan Russia” is withdrawing into itself against the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and pretending that nothing has changed. In his opinion, 20 million Russians can be classified as such people.
Mr. Fedorov told RBC, which divides society into “four Russias” according to the model of the executive director of Minchenko Consulting Evgenia Stulova: “Warring Russia”, “Capital Russia”, “Deep Russia” and “Leaving Russia”. “Capital Russia,” in his opinion, are “beneficiaries of their former well-fed life.” “Now some of them have left, and the main part are, so to speak, the petty bourgeoisie, the metropolitan middle class – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg… They try to pretend that nothing has changed, they are not particularly interested in what is happening in the combat zone actions, unless it directly concerns their own safety,” said the head of VTsIOM.
Anxiety has been “in the base” of Russians for about five years: since mid-2018, Russia has been in a “difficult socio-psychological state” due to pension reform, a pandemic and a special military operation. Because of this, “deviant behavior has increased, childbearing has decreased,” people have to make more efforts to “maintain control over their lives,” and this is “very exhausting.”
According to the head of VTsIOM, along with this there are adaptation processes, which is why “Capital Russia” is withdrawing into itself. “Russia at war” has been mobilized; this may include not only the military, but also their relatives or volunteers. “For some, the operation was a long-awaited event that allowed them to mobilize. For others – shock, trauma, an incentive to fly out of the country or go into internal emigration. For still others, it’s an opportunity to earn decent money, including at the risk of their own life and health,” explained Mr. Fedorov.
