140 exotic animals seized from a passenger at Zhukovsky airport

An unusual cargo was found on one of the passengers of the Zhukovsky airport. A man who was transiting through Kazakhstan from Thailand tried to carry more than 140 reptiles, amphibians, arthropods and invertebrates in his luggage. The owner did not have veterinary documents for exotic cargo. Law enforcement agencies handed over the find to the Center for the Rehabilitation of Wild Animals of the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection of the city of Moscow. The condition of the new wards was recognized as unsatisfactory.

A passenger on a flight from Thailand tried to illegally transport more than 140 unusual pets in his luggage. Employees of the operational-search department managed to seize a whole batch of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates from the man. Among them were snakes, lizards, frogs, scorpions, centipedes, crabs, clams, wood lice, slugs, spiders, ants, locusts and cockroaches. Some species of seized animals are poisonous, others may be carriers of diseases dangerous to humans.

For example, the poison of the Vietnamese centipede is dangerous for an adult and can kill a child. Such animals can be kept strictly by professionals.

One can only sympathize with the fate of exotic travelers. Presumably, the animals were barbarously caught in the wild, and then taken out of their native lands. During transportation, part of the living “cargo” could die due to unbearable conditions: improper care, acclimatization, inexperience of the owners. Even an escape would not be a salvation for exotic guests – they would not be able to adapt in our latitudes, which in any case led to their death.

Currently, the seized reptiles have been transferred to the Rehabilitation Center, where they are waiting for quarantine and examination. Then the question of further fate will be decided.

A similar incident occurred in September 2022. A passenger from a flight from South Africa was detained at Domodedovo Airport, a man was trying to transport a batch of African animals. Exotic guests turned out to be representatives of the CITES list (second annex of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
