According to statistics provided by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), during 2023, 104 Russian chess players decided to change their sporting citizenship.
The list of players who stopped playing for Russia included Sanar Syugirov (40th place), Alexey Sarana (41st), Vladimir Fedoseev (45th), Nikita Vitiugov (50th), Alexander Predke (64th ), Kirill Alekseenko (89th) and Alexandra Kosteniuk (11th number in the women’s ranking).
At the same time, five new athletes joined the Russian national team over the past year: Yuri Airapetyan and Viktor Filonov, who previously represented Ukraine, David Bukata from Australia, Kanan Heydarli from Azerbaijan, and Nadezhda Iskichekova from Kazakhstan. It should be noted that members of the Russian national team participate in international tournaments under the auspices of FIDE in the status of neutral participants.
As sports.ru emphasizes, in international chess there is a simplified procedure for changing sports citizenship. The player does not need to obtain citizenship of the new country; Permanent residence in it and notification of the federations about the desire to change the sports team are enough.
