Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Russia Valery Zorkin called the main reason for the recognition of the treaties on the inclusion of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into the country. According to him, the Constitutional Court was guided by fears for the lives of the local population.

“In making these decisions, the Constitutional Court recognized the relevant treaties, proceeding mainly – first of all – from the fact that there was a direct threat to the lives of the inhabitants, the population of these regions,” said Mr. Zorkin (quote from Interfax).

The Ukrainian authorities, said the head of the Constitutional Court, using modern weapons that they received from abroad, launched active attacks directly directed against the population.

After evaluating how the conflict is developing, the Constitutional Court considered that the four regions had the right to use the principles of international law, including the UN Charter, and declare independence, Mr. Zorkin added.

Earlier today, October 2, SC acknowledged the constitutionality of the treaties on the inclusion of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into Russia. October 3 State Duma will consider draft treaties ratification, October 4 – Federation Council.
