“Zenith” filled the full net – Newspaper Kommersant No. 198 (7399) of 10/25/2022

Zenit easily kept a huge lead over their pursuers in the Russian Championship table, surprisingly big, with a score of 7:0, defeating Sochi on the final day of the 14th round at home. On the same evening, the recent outsider “Ural”, which is experiencing an incredible rise in the fall, coped at home – 2: 1 – with the “Wings of the Soviets”, slightly strengthening its position in the championship.
The next round of the Russian Championship ended the match with a formally good “sign”, which did not correspond to its content at all. There was a winner and a silver medalist of the previous championship. Such a combination seemed to promise some kind of struggle, but in reality there was nothing like it.
Zenit scored in their first more or less distinct attack.
None of the Sochi residents reacted to Wendel’s run at the left edge of the penalty area, and the defenders weren’t helped even by the fact that the Brazilian, in fact, didn’t succeed. The ball flew into the Sochi leader Christian Noboa, but from him it ricocheted into the Zenit player, who is more similar to the intended recipient of the cross, Ivan Sergeyev. And then something amazing happened. From Sergeyev’s chest, the ball soared into the air and parachuted down under the crossbar.
The next Zenit goal did not have to wait long. It took place after Wendel and Malcolm cut through Sochi’s defense at speed. The guests rushed about at the last frontier, trying to guess the new move of the nimble duet, but everything was pointless. Malcom circled the defender, and then began to shoot the goalkeeper Soslan Dzhanaev. He coped with the first strike of the striker, but with the second, in a second, no.
And the Sochi residents, doused with a bucket of ice water, continued to fake, and soon Malcolm had a chance to run away one on one with Dzhanaev. The escape was thwarted near the penalty line by Artem Meshchaninov. The moment was checking VAR, but referee Yevhen Kukulyak took out a red card from his pocket in advance, realizing that the violator probably deserved it. Sochi remained in the minority.
These events could, of course, affect not only the guests, but also the hosts, depriving them of motivation: all the same, three points will not go anywhere. But in the midst of autumn, Zenit seems to have gained such a tone when football is a joy in any situation.
He did not lose his taste for attacks and managed to score twice more before the break. Another rebound helped Sergeyev to get a double, now from Dzhanaev, who could not stop the transfer of Vyacheslav Karavaev. And Wendel put the ball into the net with a perfectly executed shot from a couple of tens of meters.
The strangest thing is that even the break did not make Zenit calm down at least a little. Well, or it was Sochi that was already in such a bad state that, against its background, the slowed down champion still looked like a giant who does whatever his heart desires on the field. As a result, three more balls flew into the Sochi gate – from Wilmar Barrios, Malcolm and Gustavo Mantua. The last two – after the blunders of Artur Yusupov and Dzhanaev, who best told about what kind of mood the guests are now.
The win saved Zenit a huge margin of safety. Seven points separate the leader of the championship from the closest pursuer – Spartak.
But Sochi, which, as it seemed relatively recently, is ready to fight for medals again, is six points behind CSKA, which closes the top three.
In another match of the day, Ural secured the status of the main transformation of autumn in Russian football. The Yekaterinburg club looked like an outsider in the summer, doomed to a hard struggle for survival, but some time after the appearance of a new coach, Viktor Goncharenko, it suddenly experienced an amazing transformation. The victory over “Wings of the Soviets” – 2: 1 – was the fourth in a row for the “Urals” in the championship. And if we count all the official matches, that is, add the Cup of Russia to the championship, in which the team is also doing well, – the sixth. And he is no longer in the basement of the table, but in the tail of the top ten, much closer to the quiet middle than to the danger zone.
In the game with “Wings of the Soviets” almost everything was decided by the episode in the middle of the first half. Ural forward Lazar Randzhelovich, who flew into someone else’s penalty area, beat goalkeeper Bogdan Ovsyannikov, but Glenn Bale secured him. True, the VAR that turned on confirmed that the Samara player played with his hand. Judge Kirill Levnikov, of course, applied a double punishment – he appointed a penalty, and also removed Bale.
Aleksey Kashtanov converted a penalty kick, and the Wings, who remained in the minority, should not have counted on an advantage. They still scored their goal, but already at the end of the match and after they themselves conceded the second goal.
