Zenit captain and defender Douglas Santos responded to Artem Dzyuba’s words that the Russian team should have a core of Russians. The team’s victory in the Russian championship is a joint result of Brazilian and Russian players, Santos said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“You know, it seems to me that this is a wonderful mixture – St. Petersburg and other cities in which the current Zenit players were born. Russians or foreigners – it doesn’t matter. In the combination of these cities under the Zenit banner, we will come first for the sixth year in a row,” Santos said.
There are nine Brazilians in Zenit’s squad. Mario Fernandez and Claudinho have Russian citizenship. Robert Renan and Do Queiroz were loaned out to Internacional and Gremio in the winter.
In the Russian Premier League, Zenit is in the lead after 20 rounds. Krasnodar is one point behind the club and Dynamo Moscow is two points behind.
