President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was dissatisfied with the venue for the Eurovision 2023 final.
The Eurovision 2023 final will take place on May 13 in the UK. Recall that earlier the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) decided to move Eurovision 2023 from the territory of Ukraine, which won the contest in 2022, to British Liverpool for security reasons. At the same time, the representative of Ukraine automatically went to the final of the competition. The EBU also suspended Russia from participating in Eurovision due to concerns about the crisis in Ukraine, since Russia’s participation could damage the reputation of the contest.
Zelensky on the air of the BBC said that the Eurovision final should have been held in Poland or Slovakia, which have a common border with Ukraine.
“From the very beginning, my opinion was that if we cannot host Eurovision, then it should take place in one of the countries that border us, such as Slovakia, Poland or any other country where our people can easily reach ”, Zelensky said, noting that in any case he respects the UK and its citizens.
Earlier, the Times newspaper, citing an EBU representative, reported that Zelensky’s request to give him the opportunity to make a video message at the Eurovision final was rejected. EBU representatives noted that this competition is an international entertainment show and one of its cornerstones is the non-political nature of the event. Therefore, making political or similar statements within the framework of the contest is prohibited.
