Zelensky threatened the EU with arbitration when extending restrictions on grain imports

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv would apply to arbitration if the EU extended restrictions on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products Kyiv. He believes that Brussels is violating its promises, association agreements and free market conditions. Mr. Zelensky urged European institutions not to “multiply disappointment in Europe”
“Ukraine is categorically against any further restrictions on the export of our grain. … If we need to fight for Ukraine and the foundations of our common Europe in arbitrations, we will also fight in arbitrations, although we do not want this,” Zelensky said in an address to the participants of the Three Seas Initiative summit.
The Ukrainian leader addressed separately those countries that support the extension of the ban on grain imports. In his opinion, they “scale the destruction” from the conflict with Russia. Addressing the European Union, Mr. Zelensky noted that the foundation of Europe “is, in particular, free competition and keeping promises.” And, according to the Ukrainian president, Kyiv, unlike Brussels, keeps its promises. In addition, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Kyiv is “calmly watching” how it becomes a source of “good income” for various European countries that process agricultural products and earn on logistics.
EU in May imposed a ban for the import of Ukrainian grain to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to protect local farmers. The restrictions do not affect transit. The ban is valid until September 15. Poland intends to introduce restrictions at the national level, unless the EU extends the ban.
