“I have cigarettes on my conscience”

The special operation in Ukraine has been going on for almost a year. All this time, help is coming to the front not only from the state, but also from ordinary people. The stars of show business also joined the cause. Singer Katya Semenova has been helping the fighters for ten months now. The performer told MK correspondents about how the necessary funds are being raised and which of the stars helps the front.

“Since April, I have been collecting things necessary for our soldiers,” Katya says. – We add up money, buy what we need, and send it to the front. Not big, of course: we don’t have the money for that. We buy as much as we can and what we need.

Do you help only the military or local residents too?

“Now we are helping the fighters, before that, help was sent to Mariupol to local residents. We usually buy syringes, medicines, socks, candles… I have recently been charged with buying cigarettes. Now 50 blocks are ready to be sent.

– Do many artists help the military?

– Yes very many. And Tanya Abramova, and Yana Poplavskaya, and Lena Borzova, and Seryozha Varchuk – I can’t list them all even now. But not only artists help: both friends participate, and my classmates. Some I tell myself, others through someone else. All are well received. Am I doing something out of the ordinary? We form lists, distribute who helps and how. On my conscience, as I said, cigarettes. We used to send what we collected through a special fund. Now we have another way out – it goes right to the address. We collect the boxes, put them in the car and that’s it.

– Concerts of stars are regularly held in Donbass. Have you already sung there?

– Not. I haven’t been invited there yet. The guys need, probably, someone younger – the artist they know. There are mostly young guys there. I spoke to refugees. They received me well: everything went fine. Now I’m waiting for a new concert. They promised to invite me to the hospital to see the wounded soldiers.

– When do you think the SVO will end?

– When we win. When that will happen, I have no idea. I’m not a military leader. But at the same time, I understand that hostilities cannot last forever.

— Did you know Zelensky?

– Not. God was merciful. To me, he is absolute evil. Both my mother and father fought in the Great Patriotic War. I was little, I remember how veterans and fellow soldiers always gathered with us. I grew up in this. My parents fought against fascism and we are doing the same now. We are on the bright side.
