Zakharova: Russia respects Hungary’s decision on Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership

Moscow respects Budapest’s decision to give its consent to Finland and Sweden joining NATO. This statement was made on Wednesday at a briefing by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
“Russia respects the sovereignty of Hungary, believes that the issues of its domestic and foreign policy are decided by the sovereign state on its own,” RIA Novosti quoted the diplomat as saying.
As Zakharova noted, “in general” this is “our difference from the Western or NATO-centric world order.”
Earlier, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that Budapest had notified him of Hungary’s intention to ratify the agreement on membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO in February 2023.
After Russia launched a NWO in Ukraine, Finland and Sweden decided to join NATO, fearing the “Russian threat”. However, Turkey and Hungary opposed their joining the bloc.
Ankara subsequently put forward a number of conditions for Helsinki and Stockholm, under which it will give its consent to their entry into the organization. Among them, in particular, was the deportation of supporters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, recognized in Turkey as a terrorist organization.
On November 28, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest supports the entry of Finland and Sweden into the alliance.
