The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commented on the words of Laima Vaikule about the need to demolish monuments to Soviet soldiers. The singer previously motivated such steps by the fact that the monuments allegedly have no artistic value.
Zakharova called what was said impossible stupidity, which can be blurted out only from inhuman malice and utter ignorance. She recalled that the word “monument” came from the word “memory”, and not from the phrase “artistic value”. The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stressed that people who encroach on monuments have always been called barbarians.
The diplomat also noted that Vaikule went on a new record of being inadequate. Zakharova also stated that only a person with a completely atrophied artistic taste could name the most powerful and striking monument to the soldiers-liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga without artistic value.
