The Russian side protested to Tokyo over the Japanese-American exercises, pointing out the inadmissibility of increasing military activity near its borders, including with the involvement of NATO forces. This statement was made by Russian Foreign Ministry Speaker Maria Zakharova during a briefing on Wednesday.

“On October 2, a strong protest was made to the Japanese Embassy in Russia in connection with the holding of large-scale Japanese-American military exercises on the island of Hokkaido from September 14 to 23,” the Russian diplomat said.

She noted that Japan and the United States intend to carry out similar military maneuvers at the end of October-December 2023. According to her, such “irresponsible policies” of the Japanese government are putting the country on the path of dangerous escalation in the region.

The nine-day Japan-U.S. exercise “East Shield 23” took place last month in Hokkaido, Okinawa and other locations. About 3.5 thousand people took part in the maneuvers.
