The deployment of NATO AWACS aircraft to Lithuania is a continuation of the Alliance’s aggressive buildup of forces near Russian borders. Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this to TASS.
“All the stories of the North Atlantic Alliance many years ago that they are simply engaged in interaction with other members of the alliance, in fact, have now turned out to be simply lies. And we understand perfectly well what they are really doing. <...> – increasing aggressive activity along the perimeter of our country’s borders,” Zakharova emphasized.
On the website of the command of the Lithuanian army on September 28 appeared message that the Transatlantic Alliance AWACS aircraft arrived at the Zokniai airbase in the city of Siauliai along with a special military contingent of about 150 people. It is clarified that AWACS and their crews will be involved in a reconnaissance mission. The department did not specify the number of aircraft arriving in the republic.
Previously, the US Navy and the Danish Defense Forces conducted exercises in the Baltic on the use of a container launcher for SM-6 missiles.
