President of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” Mikhail Kovalchuk said that in the context of the “aggressive” actions of the West towards Russia, it is necessary to resume nuclear weapons tests in the country.
Mr. Kovalchuk pointed out that in 1961 the USSR tested a thermonuclear “Tsar Bomba” with a yield of more than 50 megatons in response to aggressive US rhetoric, after which “the Americans immediately began to negotiate.”
“It’s exactly the same situation now. It is enough to conduct tests on Novaya Zemlya. At least once. And everything will fall into place,” said Mikhail Kovalchuk at the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the domestic nuclear industry (quote from “RIA News”).

However, the document has not yet entered into force, since it must be ratified by all 44 states that own or have access to nuclear weapons. So far, only 36 countries have done this.
In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking to the Federal Assembly, instructed the Ministry of Defense and Rosatom to ensure “readiness to test Russian nuclear weapons” in case the United States takes such actions.
