Yuri Malikov decided not to celebrate the 80th anniversary: the whole family left

On July 6, the creator and head of VIA “Gems” Yuri Malikov celebrates his anniversary. It is difficult to imagine the number of people who want to congratulate him on an impressive date. The hits of “Gems” became the music of several generations, and over the years, Yuri Fedorovich met and made friends with a variety of people, including very famous people. For the editors of “MK” it has always been a great honor and pleasure to communicate and be friends with the legendary musician, so the anniversary of Yuri Malikov is also a great holiday for us.
True, this time there are no celebrations appropriate in such a case. A couple of days before the anniversary, we called Yuri Fedorovich and found him on a sanatorium vacation. “I won’t celebrate anything, and I left Moscow especially for my birthday,” the hero of the day said. It’s time for me to rest a little, think about my health. After all, even cars eventually require body repairs.
Gathering with the whole family for the birthday of Yuri Fedorovich is a long tradition of the Malikovs. But this year things are different. “It so happened that this year everyone left. Dima is working, preparing for Slavianski Bazaar, Inna is on tour, and I am on vacation, – said Yuri Malikov in an interview with MK. – But we will gather in Moscow, like schoolchildren, on the first of September. After all, the anniversary can be celebrated throughout the year.
The voice of the birthday man sounded, as always, very cheerful, which once again confirms the enviable ability of the Malikov family to build relationships with their own passport data. If the older grandchildren have already become adults and independent people, then the star children Dmitry and Inna, as well as their parents Yuri Fedorovich and Lyudmila Mikhailovna, clearly support the idea of a long youth.
When asked about the secret drugs that help maintain such an enviable tone, Yuri Malikov usually throws up his hands, but there is a suspicion that the feeling that Alla Pugacheva once described as “holy love for music” is to blame for everything. If not for such love, then a student of an industrial technical school, impressed by the classic Hollywood film “Sunny Valley Serenade”, would hardly have begged the club director to buy him a double bass, like the protagonist of the picture. And he begged, and then learned to play it, became a member of the pop orchestra in Podolsk, entered the famous Moscow Ippolitov-Ivanov School of Music and eventually graduated from the conservatory.
Yuriy Fedorovich’s musical resume contains many impressive recordings, but a separate line, of course, marks his important role in creating the most vocal-instrumental type of ensemble in the USSR. “Gems” appeared in 1971, at that time there were already “Pesnyary”, “Merry Fellows” and “Blue Guitars” on the Soviet stage. Not too crowded for a huge country, but not without competition. In an effort to find something that would distinguish “Gems” from others, Yuri Malikov actually came up with the technology of the so-called unison singing, when a recognizable vocal timbre is obtained by merging certain voices. And the timbre of the “Gems” was hard not to recognize and even harder to confuse.
Probably, a pop ensemble may seem like an occupation too simple for a graduate of the conservatory, but classical education helped Yuri Malikov in many ways to collect a repertoire that thundered throughout the country. In fact, Yuri Fedorovich served as a music producer at a time when there was no such term in the country yet. “Gems” performed songs by Mark Fradkin, Serafim Tulikov, David Tukhmanov and even recorded one composition by Muslim Magomayev.
It is curious that many future hits were selected from material that was intended for other artists, but for some reason did not suit them. “This never happens again” Serafim Tulikov wrote for Maya Kristalinskaya, however, under the impression of the arrangement of “Gems”, the composer gave the song to a young group, and the composition became a hit.
“Everything that I have in life” at first did not make any impression on the team, but Malikov convinced her to record it – and now it’s hard to imagine any performance of the Gems without this hit. The Alexandrov Red Banner Ensemble did not take “I’ll Take You to the Tundra” into their repertoire, and “Gems” made it a super hit. Perhaps all this resembles happy accidents, but in reality we are talking about an enviable musical intuition, and this Yuri Fedorovich owes much to his classical education.
The successful reboot of Gems, led by Inna Malikova, is also a manifestation of intuition. There are not so many bands that can gather several generations of listeners at their concerts at once, and the younger the band is now, the less chance it has to attract an older audience. But at a time when the popularity of an artist often determines the number of subscribers on social networks, updated versions of the golden hits of the Soviet stage have become an excellent investment and a very successful project.
Yuri Fedorovich raised a whole musical dynasty. His son and daughter were fond of music from a young age, entered the stage as very young people, and now they are experienced and popular artists. True, 23-year-old granddaughter Stefania and 24-year-old grandson Dmitry are in no hurry to make music the main thing in their lives, preferring other areas of activity. But the family hopes for the five-year-old Mark, who, under the guidance of his father Dmitry, is already making the first progress.
However, Yuri Fedorovich himself, at his respectable age, continues to be an active musician who is sure to come up with something. We will wait, and today we sincerely congratulate the hero of the day on his birthday!
