The 90th anniversary of the birth of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin is celebrated in Russia and abroad
Saturday, March 9, marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of the first Soviet cosmonaut, the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin.
The future hero, who became a symbol of the beginning of a new era in the history of mankind, was born in 1934 in the village of Klushino, now part of the Gagarinsky district of the Smolensk region named after him. Yuri became the fourth child in the family of carpenter Alexei Ivanovich and milkmaid Anna Timofeevna. In honor of their son, the city of Gagarin was subsequently named – the former Gzhatsk, where the family moved after the end of the Great Patriotic War. Gagarin took his first steps towards his future feat at the Saratov Technical School, where he met members of the local flying club, joined them and made his first flights. And after serving in the army, Gagarin learned about recruitment into the cosmonaut corps and applied.
Having gone through all the stages of preparation and tough selection, Gagarin was chosen to play the role of the first space conqueror; German Titov was appointed as his backup. On the morning of April 12, 1961, the Vostok-1 spacecraft with Gagarin on board made the world’s first manned flight into space. After 108 minutes, Gagarin returned to Earth as a global hero. Over the next few years, the cosmonaut studied at the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy, worked at the Cosmonaut Training Center, and toured the countries of the world. A tragic accident cut short the life of the first cosmonaut – on March 27, 1968, while performing a training flight, Gagarin died at the age of 34. Today he could have turned 90 years old…
On the occasion of the memorable date, various events are planned in Moscow and in Gagarin’s homeland, in the Smolensk region, as well as in Kaluga – the homeland of the founder of Russian cosmonautics, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. And even abroad. Thus, an international scientific and practical conference dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the cosmonaut’s birth will soon start at Baikonur. And in Colombo, filming of a documentary film begins – Yuri Gagarin visited Ceylon in 1961.
