YouTube video service published principles of partnership with the music industry in the field of artificial intelligence technologies, in particular, the company is going to pay copyright holders and artists for using their music to train AI. The company has already reached an agreement with the Universal Music Group (UMG) label, which, for example, owns the rights to Frank Sinatra’s catalogue.
YouTube is calling the new policy a “music AI incubator” and is looking to work with artists and copyright holders, including protecting copyrights. According to a YouTube spokesperson, “AI is already with us and we will take it responsibly with our music partners.”
In 2023, according to YouTube, over 1.7 billion views on the service received videos generated by AI in one way or another. Earlier, UMG repeatedly asked YouTube and Spotify to remove AI-generated tracks based on songs the rights to which belong to the label. Therefore, UMG decided to team up with YouTube so that artists can be compensated if AI is taught on their tracks.
